Maersk AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) Ship
BACKGROUND
The anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) ship has a length of 90m (98yd), a beam of 23m (25yd), a deadweight of 5,010 metric tons and a maximum speed of 16 knots.
It is powered by 4 Krupp-MaK diesel engines which deliver a total power of 17 MW (22,800 hp) to two propeller shafts. The AHTS is used for towing, delivering essential supplies and for handling and setting the anchors of offshore oil drilling rigs.
SUMMARY
Shaft brakes are used to stop and hold the propeller shafts in case of an emergency. Each propeller shaft is equipped with two Dellner SKD 4x100 pressure applied caliper disc brakes, operating on a 1,500mm (59 in) diameter disc.
The brakes are applied with hydraulic pressure from a pneumatic to hydraulic pressure intensifier system, delivering brake torque of up to 284 kNm (2,513,600 lbf-in) per shaft.
